Canton Fair 2026: How to Stay Connected in Guangzhou

Oct 12,2026 | Milo

Pazhou is not a small place. The Canton Fair complex has about 1.55 million square metres of exhibition space, and when the 140th Canton Fair (Autumn 2026) opens on 15 October, your phone will do real work there: the official app handles face-recognition login, booth navigation and e-catalogues, on top of the usual messages and maps.

This guide answers one narrow question: how do you keep that phone online for a Canton Fair trip? You will find the dates and sectors, the options for mobile data in China, and the plan we would pick for a typical one-phase visit. If you have already decided, here is our Mainland China eSIM.

Canton Fair 2026: Dates, Phases and Venue

The fair runs from 15 October to 4 November 2026, in three five-day phases. On the changeover days in between, exhibitors swap booths and nothing is on show.

Dates Phase and theme Main sectors
15–19 October Phase 1: Advanced Manufacturing Industrial automation, machinery, electronics and appliances, new energy vehicles, hardware and tools, lighting, service robots
20–22 October Changeover, no exhibition –
23–27 October Phase 2: Quality Home Life Ceramics, kitchenware, furniture, building materials, home decorations, gifts, fashion jewelry
28–30 October Changeover, no exhibition –
31 October–4 November Phase 3: Better Life Toys, children and baby products, clothing and shoes, home textiles, office supplies, food, medicines and health products

Exhibitors change from phase to phase, so choose the phase that matches your product category. China's Ministry of Commerce publishes an overview of the 140th session with the full sector list and the schedule, and the organisers' attendance guide for overseas buyers covers badges and opening hours. New overseas buyers can pre-register online and collect badges at offices including Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport and Guangzhou South Railway Station.

All three phases are held at the China Import and Export Fair Complex, 382 Yuejiang Zhong Road, Haizhu District, usually shortened to the Pazhou Complex.

Dates checked on 12 October 2026. Phase dates, sectors and badge rules can change. Confirm them with the organisers before you book flights.

Why Mobile Data Matters at the Fair

The fair itself is partly an app. According to the Ministry of Commerce overview, the Canton Fair App covers e-catalogues, instant messaging with exhibitors, business card exchange, itineraries and navigation, and you can log in with facial recognition. It also lists an AI agent for finding exhibitors and products, and AI notes that summarise key points from a discussion. The organisers say positioning systems are deployed throughout the complex, so the app can guide you to a specific booth.

Every one of those features needs a connection. A booth-level route is no use if the map will not load, and a business card exchange only works while you are online. Whether you rely on venue Wi-Fi or on your own data is your call, but it is worth having your own line for the moments that matter.

Outside the app, the list is familiar: replying to quotes, translating a spec sheet, booking a ride back to the hotel. And if you work from a laptop, tethering it to your phone is often easier than trusting a hotel network with a purchase order.

Your Internet Options in China

Roaming, a local SIM, a travel eSIM or Wi-Fi: each one wins in a different situation.

Option Best when Catch
Roaming on your home plan You want zero setup Rates and caps vary widely by carrier, so check before you fly
Local physical SIM You need a Chinese phone number Passport registration, plus a shop visit after you land
Travel eSIM You want data arranged before departure, with your home number still on if your phone has dual SIM Data only, no Chinese number
Hotel or venue Wi-Fi Backup, or large downloads Speed swings with the time of day and the crowd

For a fair trip we lean towards a travel eSIM with Wi-Fi as the backup. The exception is anyone who must receive SMS codes from a Chinese app: a data eSIM cannot do that, and a local SIM is the better tool. Our article on whether China supports eSIM goes into the reasons.

What a China eSIM Does for a Buyer's Trip

An eSIM is a digital SIM, so there is no card to swap. We email you the eSIM, you install it on stable Wi-Fi at home, and the plan starts when it is activated, which happens automatically once you connect in China. If your phone supports dual SIM, your regular SIM can stay in place and keep receiving calls and texts from home.

Our Mainland China eSIM runs mainly on China Mobile, with Unicom and Telecom as backup on Daily plans. Your data is routed internationally, which matters because some global services, WhatsApp among them, are blocked on mainland networks. Our article on whether WhatsApp works in China explains how this works. No mobile plan can promise that every service works every minute, so keep a backup for anything critical.

Two limits to know before you buy. It is a data-only plan with no phone number. And hotspot sharing is supported, which is useful for a laptop, but a laptop uses data much faster than a phone.

Choosing a Plan for Your Canton Fair Dates

Start with the calendar, not the data size. A phase lasts five days, but you also need a day to arrive and a day to leave, which makes 7 days the typical trip: land on 22 October, attend Phase 2 from 23 to 27 October, fly out on 28 October. Service days are counted in 24-hour blocks from activation, so a 7-day plan activated at 9:00 on 22 October runs until 8:59 on 29 October.

7-day plan Price Suits Limit
Daily, 1GB per day $6.90 Steady daily use: messages, email, maps After the day's high-speed data, speed drops to 128kbps
Total, 10GB $8.90 Uneven days, heavy on some and light on others After the total is used, speed drops to 128kbps
Unlimited (5G) $20.90 Tethering a laptop, long video calls Fair usage policy applies; supports 1080p HD streaming under it

Prices in USD, checked on 12 October 2026. Plans run from 1 to 30 days, with other data sizes on the plan page.

All three are data-only plans, so no Chinese phone number comes with them. Our pick for a typical one-phase trip is the 7-day Total 10GB at $8.90: it costs $2 more than Daily 1GB but gives 10GB to spread across heavy and light days, against 7GB in total on the Daily plan. Move up to Unlimited at $20.90 if a laptop will be tethered every day. Even then, video call quality also depends on the network around you.

If you are attending two phases, or visiting suppliers on the changeover days, pick a longer plan that covers every day you will be in China.

Continuing to Hong Kong or Macao after the fair? Choose our China, Hong Kong and Macao eSIM instead, so you stay covered on both sides of the border. Do not assume a mainland-only plan will cover them.

Setting Up Before You Fly

  1. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked, using our compatible devices list.
  2. Buy your plan. The eSIM is emailed straight away.
  3. Install it on stable Wi-Fi, by QR code or with one tap in the ByteSIM app. The setup guide shows each screen.
  4. After landing, enable the ByteSIM line in Settings and turn Data Roaming on for it. The plan connects and activates on its own.

If something does not connect, support is available by email service@bytesim.com and WhatsApp +852 9290 0577, at any hour.

FAQ

Does the China eSIM come with a phone number?

No. It is a data-only plan, so calls and messages go through apps over data. If you need a Chinese number to receive local SMS codes, an eSIM alone will not provide one.

Can I use my regular SIM at the same time?

Yes, if your phone supports dual SIM. The eSIM does not affect your physical SIM, so you can stay reachable on your home number.

Do I need to register with my passport?

Not for our eSIM. A local Chinese SIM does require real-name registration with a passport, as the China-Britain Business Council's SIM guide describes. That is one more errand after a long flight.

Can I buy and install after I land?

The eSIM arrives by email at once, but installing it needs an internet connection, so you would be relying on whatever Wi-Fi you can reach. Doing it at home is less stressful.

What happens when my high-speed data runs out?

On Daily and Total plans, speed drops to 128kbps once the quota is used. To get full speed back, top up in the app if your plan supports it (the plan page lists top-up for Total plans) or add another plan. Activating a new package ends the one that is running, so switch only when you are ready.

Can I share data with my laptop?

Yes, hotspot sharing is supported. The laptop draws from the same plan as your phone, so choose a larger Total plan or Unlimited if you will work from it daily.
