How to make calls with a Canadian number?
Traveling to Canada and need a hassle-free way to stay connected? An eSIM with a Canadian number is your perfect solution! It offers seamless activation, eliminates the need for physical SIM cards, and ensures you’re ready to make calls, send texts, and use data the moment you land. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the simple steps to get your Canada eSIM and enjoy uninterrupted connectivity throughout your trip.
Things to Check Before Purchase
1. Device compatibility
You can check if your smartphone is eSIM compatible here. Alternatively, here is a list of laptops compatible with eSIM.
2. Locked Phone VS Unlocked Phone
Mobile phones depend on a carrier to make calls and interface to portable data. Carriers permit your phone to interface to their network.
- If your phone is not locked, this implies that it can interface to any carrier’s network.
- If your phone is locked, it implies that it can only connect to the network of a specific carrier as stipulated in your contract.
For more information about unlocked phone, please see here.
3. Length of travel
When selecting an eSIM plan, make sure to choose one that aligns with the length of your trip. This will help you avoid the possibility of running out of data during your travels or unintentionally exceeding your budget.
Also, take into account the amount of data you will need based on your activities, such as streaming, browsing, or using navigation apps, and pick a plan that provides sufficient coverage for your entire stay. Doing so ensures a smoother and more enjoyable experience while you're away from home.
How to Get an eSIM with a Canadian Number?
Step 1: Choose an eSIM plan

Go to ByteSIM's website or download the ByteSIM app (available on both iOS and Android).
Choose an eSIM package that fits your needs like the length of stay. The following table shows the eSIM packages offered by ByteSIM (sold-out sections are not listed). As you can see, the longer your trip, the lower the daily cost.
Step 2: Purchase and Install your eSIM
Quite similar to ByteSIM's USA eSIM plan with calls, you have to submit an activation date before purchase (see below). Then you'll receive an email on the activation date (Vancouver Time, UTC-7).

In that email, you'll receive a QR code for installation, your Canadian phone number and other information about your eSIM. Then you can scan the code to install eSIM on your eSIM-compatible devices like iPhones, Samsung, and Google Pixel.
Step 3: Use your data and Canadian number
After installation, choose eSIM as Mobile Data and Default Voice Line. Also, turn on Data Roaming of eSIM. Then it'll activate automatically when connected to local network. You can turn off Primary SIM in case it causes expensive roaming fees. You can use the number to make unlimited UK calls and international calls.

How to Make Calls with a Canadian Number?
When using a Canadian phone number, understanding the dialing formats for local and international calls is crucial. Below, we’ll walk you through the steps for making calls within Canada and to other countries, ensuring you stay connected effortlessly.
1. Making local calls in Canada
Canada follows the North American Numbering Plan (NANP), where phone numbers are structured as follows:
Format: (Area Code) + Local Number
For example: To call a local number in Toronto, dial: 416-123-4567
Key Tips:
- If you’re in the same area code, you may not need to include the area code. However, some regions require 10-digit dialing even for local calls.
- Area codes vary across provinces, so make sure to check the local area code if needed.
2. Making International Calls from Canada
To call a number outside Canada, you’ll need to use the international dialing prefix 011, followed by the country code, area code, and local number.
Format: 011 + Country Code + Area Code + Local Number
For example: To call a number in the UK from Canada, dial: 011-44-20-1234-5678
Key Tips for International Calls:
- Country Codes: Each country has a unique dialing code. For instance, the UK is 44, and Australia is 61.
- Avoiding Mistakes: Ensure you drop any leading zeroes in the area code for international numbers. For example, UK numbers like 020 1234 5678 become 20 1234 5678 after the country code.
- International Plans: Check if your plan includes international minutes or consider using VoIP services like WhatsApp or Skype for cost-effective international calls.
